The very first Chicken Soup for the Soul book was published, in 1993. I didn't see it that year; in fact it was not until sometime after 2002 that I picked up a copy. And my life was changed! It was altered in a most positive way; and subsequently, other lives have also been touched because of it.
I found that book on the shelf, in the home of my sister, Dorothy. I was visiting there to help as she healed from a hip replacement. On her first night home from the hospital, we sisters reminisced and laughed sharing childhood memories. As we talked I noticed Dorothy continually rubbed at her leg. When I asked her about it, she replied, "I'm worried about the circulation."
I felt her leg and gasped. The leg was not only swollen, but solid, as if made of iron. Now we were both concerned.
That night as I got ready for bed I knelt to pray for Dorothy, "Please Heavenly Father if there is anything I can do for my sister, please show me."
Earlier when I had spotted the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book, I set it at my bed-side to read. I read randomly and as I read through my fourth story, I was overcome with a warm sensation in my chest. And then God used the story to show me how to help my sister. The story, called "Amy Graham," was written by Mark Victor Hansen. It was about healing.
The next morning it feIt awkward as I told Dorothy about the events of my night and explained I was supposed to do the same thing to help her circulation. I'd never done anything like this before and felt she might just laugh at me or at least look at me strangely. I stumbled and stammered through my explanation telling Dorothy, "I don't have a clue what I'm doing."
She didn't ridicule me, nor look at me as though I'd soon be admitted to a psyche ward. She smiled at me and said, "Let's try Ellie."
I'd never been so grateful for my sister's easygoing attitude as I was at that moment. She trusted me and appeared to have more confidence about where we were going than I did. I was filled with a mixture of exhilaration and trepidation. I felt almost anxious with anticipation, full of hope for things unseen, wanting so much to help Dorothy.
I rubbed my hands together vigorously for some fifteen seconds then held them an inch above my sister's injured leg. Slowly and consciously I moved my hands back and forth barely above her leg. Suddenly I opened my mouth in shock, wanting to describe what I felt - yet I was momentarily speechless. Then, with a half laugh, yet in absolute awe, I asked, "Oh Dorothy, can you feel that?"
By now a strong, magnificent energy was pulsing back and forth between my hands and her leg. It was powerful and the experience was like no other.
I looked up at my sister, wanting her to feel the same thing. At first she indicated she could feel nothing then within seconds her eyes lit up and with a look of excited surprise she said, "Ellie, it is so powerful, I expect to see sparks!"
I felt beyond high, for we both were experiencing the same phenomenon. It was a moment of unbelievable excitement. I was in awe! I continued to move my hands up and down the swollen leg while experiencing the incredible, pulsing energy.
Strangely we didn't discuss what had taken place when I was finished. Perhaps it was because we were both so astounded over the entire event.
I wonder, was it a coincidence when a friend of Dorothy's arrived at her house that evening? The woman was in pain, having just had a biopsy done on her neck. Wanting to alleviate the pain, Dorothy said, "Oh let Ellie do this hand thing on you!"
I experienced mixed feelings about this. Was this all right with God? Would the energy still be there? Was I supposed to do this for others? With a bit of hesitation, I said a silent prayer and moved my hands over her neck. She later told my sister the amazing result; the pain disappeared! However, it was a year and a half before I was to hear that news, and to discover all that my sister had experienced that day at her home.
I had decided to write an account of the event which had taken place more than a year earlier. As I wrote I realized I needed my sister's feelings and impressions of that day so I phoned to ask her: "Dorothy, tell me what you felt that day."
She was quiet, yet even over the phone I felt her reverence. She used the words, peaceful, satisfying and fulfilling. Her voice changed as she relived the moments. "Oh Ellie, It seemed like there was something over top of me, above me. It was very powerful and I experienced such a feeling of love. The pain just seemed to dissolve."
Joy filled me as I listened to her. Trusting God, I had asked for a way to help my sister. And through the story of another God had shown me the way. Today we remember that miracle when both of us experienced being touched by the divine - God's love in action!
Over the next couple of years there were times when tentatively I would help others, praying first then following through using this same method. I wanted to do more to help people but whether it was a sense of shyness or an insecurity about travelling into uncharted waters I held back many times.
It was an experience in the summer of 2011 that really confirmed to me not to have doubts about what I was doing, only to celebrate the wonder of all the gifts God gives to us. This particular occurrence took place at a 'Walk' to raise funds for cancer programs and cancer research.
My daughter had discovered a gentleman, the event photographer, was suffering greatly from some form of rash which was so painful he was unable to function. Since I had coincidently just arrived at the site, my daughter suggested I try to help him.
His legs appeared infected and were inflamed. I wondered how he had managed to leave his home. Once again I applied this healing principle. When he began thanking me I told him if there was any healing, to thank God, because the healing energy was coming from Him! Days later a long distance message arrived, thanking me, confirming his legs were well and functioning as they should, and that he had been able to complete his London assignment. I was grateful for the call and ecstatic that he was healed. It is amazing what we can do when we are working with our Heavenly Father.
Through a single story in a book, God gained my attention and planted a seed, a marvelous way to help others through healing energy. I am so grateful for the privilege and opportunities. And when they arise I pray the tingling I feel through my hands will be that energy once more with us, to help the individual. Each incident demonstrates to me again and again that the divine moves through us and is always with us. God is constantly opening doors for each of us!
If you would like to use any of Ellie's material, you need her permission. Send her an email and chances are she'll say "yes!"
